Augustus “Gus” Richard Schrowang Jr., surrounded by family, died peacefully at home in Naples, FL on March 18 th , 2023. Born December 2 nd ,
1928, to Augustus Richard Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Traganza) Schrowang in Kingston, NY.

Gus’ treasured wife of 57 years, Mary “Lou” Schrowang pre-deceased him January 2018. Honoring and celebrating the life of their father are his beloved children, Augustus R., III of Sarasota, John (Melanie) of Tallahassee, Richard of Gainesville, and Mary Elizabeth of Naples; and grandchildren, Sarah Collister, Andrew (Emily), Spencer, Austin (Kamden), Sophie, and Adelaide Schrowang who all cherished the storytelling, laughter, and family gatherings with their “Poppy”. In recent years, Gus was additionally blessed with his two great granddaughters, Hannah and
Caroline.

Gus graduated from Kingston High School, Class of 1948. Inspired by his father, a WWII Veteran and well-known architect, Gus followed in his footsteps and pursued a career in architecture with A.R. Schrowang & Associates. Gus graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Architecture. While a student at Pratt, Gus was President of the Interfraternity Council, presided over the Student Executive Board, Chairman of Beaux Arts & Ball, and identified in Who’s Who’ in American Colleges and Universities in 1958 and 1959. Gus was awarded the National Award in Campus Design followed by designing the Ulster County Community College and the Ulster County Office Building.

Gus served in the United States Army and National Guard over forty years, retiring on December 2, 1988. Gus served as the Commanding officer of A. Battery 156 FA BN, NYNG, receiving awards in “Most Combat Ready” and “Best Artillery Unit”, and additionally titled Nuclear Weapon Employment Officer. Retired Ltc, Gus is a US Army Founding Sponsor of the United States Army Museum in Washington, DC.

After relocating to Tallahassee, FL in 1971, Gus was employed with the Department of Transportation as Senior Architect and Bureau Chief, designing over 300 building and multiple bridges in the state of Florida. Upon retirement, Gus’ love for art and adventure never ceased. He and his cherished “Lou” traveled the US with a variety of antique car clubs in fully restored classics primarily restored by Gus. Gus continued his artistic passion into his 90’s, having his first public art show in February, 2019. Gus’ energy and zest for life would find him daily walking in the pool at his much-loved Player’s Club.

The Schrowang family will receive visitors on Thursday, March 23, 2023,
from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Naples Funeral Home 3107 Davis Blvd., Naples, FL
34104. The funeral mass honoring Gus will be held on March 24, 2023,
10:00 am at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5130 Rattlesnake
Hammock Rd., Naples, FL 34113. Interment will be held on April 4, 2023,
at 11:30 am at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota,
FL 34241.
