Written with the help of memories shared from family and friends, all people who loved and respected this amazing soul.
Alan Blaine Pettijohn, 84, beloved husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather and friend left this world as he lived in it, privately, peacefully and at home in Naples, FL on Wednesday February 21, 2024. He was the rock of the family and the heartbeat of a home filled with love.
The son of Lewis and Ruth Pettijohn, Alan was born in Abilene, KS on February 16, 1940. Brother to Arthur, Linda and Carol. Alan spent his life in the Abilene, KS area. He owned and operated Pettijohn Farms Inc.
Loving husband for 61 years to Barbara. Together, they celebrated the joys of life and weathered the storms, creating a bond that stood the test of time. Their marriage was a testament to commitment, resilience, and the enduring power of love.
As a father, Alan’s love and guidance shaped the lives of his children, Kim and Mark. He was a dedicated and very present father. As young kids they could be found riding in the cab of a John Deere tractor when mom was working her shift at Asbury Hospital.
His greatest achievement was the home he and Barbara provided for their family. His quiet strength and hard work ensured it was filled with love, a safe place, everything a home should be. Every corner held memories of a life well-lived.
Alan treasured his grandchildren – Adam, Gareth, Chloe, and Lincoln. He leaves on each a special and unique mark, memories of travel and simply being together. His quiet presence was always a source of comfort and stability.
Alan and Barbara enjoyed a lifetime of travel all around the world. Often that travel included college friends Eric and Mollie Haberer. In the early years with all the kids along and later in life as empty-nesters.
He was a man of few words, yet when he spoke, people listened. Alan had a quiet demeanor that masked a profound understanding of life. Those who had the privilege of sharing personal and private moments with him knew that their trust was held in the safest of hands. His ability to listen without judgment made him a confidant and a source of solace for those seeking guidance. That being said, Alan only offered advice if you asked for it. He didn’t presume you wanted it.
Alan’s loyalty and fairness were the pillars of his character. Whether in his personal relationships or his professional endeavors, he approached life with integrity and commitment to what was just and right. His sense of loyalty extended to his career, where he excelled as a farmer. Alan’s dedication to his work not only earned him success but also contributed significantly to the agricultural community he was a part of, and he held that community in the greatest respect and admiration.
In the 80’s, Alan took pride in serving as a volunteer on the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Posse. He earned his license as a private pilot and enjoyed short trips and flights above the farmlands of home with family and friends. He loved the buy, sell, and trade business and would regularly travel to gun shows with his closest friends Chuck Clemence and Randy Dahlstrom. Often times he would have his grandson Adam by his side at the shows. Later Gareth, Chloe and Lincoln would be in tow. All the kids would spend the weekend making their own deals on treasures they found using the skills they learned from papa/grandpa.
Alan’s love and legacy also continues with his siblings, Linda and Carol, along with his nieces and nephews. They all loved and respected Alan deeply.
Alan was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother. As we say goodbye, please remember the man who spoke volumes often without saying a word and always through his actions. Whose loyalty and fairness left an enduring impact on all who knew and loved him.
We will someday join him in Heaven and what a reunion that will be. May he rest in eternal peace, his memory forever etched in the hearts of those who were privileged to share in his life’s journey.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Thursday March 21, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. CST at the Emmanuel Church 1300 N Vine Abilene, Ks 67410. A graveside service will be held at another time.
