Robert Lewis

Farewell to our father, Robert A. Lewis, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Geography, Columbia University, known to us as Dear Old Dad. He passed peacefully on February 25, 2026 at the age of 96. Father of Barbara and Kathy and Son-in-Law Rob, Grandfather of Drew, Anna and Lucas. He joins his wife Nancy who passed several years ago. He was mentor to a group of Ph.D. Students in Geography at Columbia University who remained his dear friends and colleagues throughout his lifetime. He was an avid tennis player for over fifty years and had many tennis partners along the way. He was born in Minot North Dakota, and grew up in Portland Oregon. He attended Army Language School and served his country as an interpreter during the Korean War. He earned the degrees of B.S. Oregon State College, M.A. George Washington University, and Ph.D. University of Washington. His recent homes were in NYC and Belmont Vermont, and he made his final home in Naples Florida. Grateful for his love, intelligence and good humor. He will be dearly missed.
