Donald H. Schummer, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Naples Florida on Friday, September 22, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife, family & friends.
Don was born December 22, 1931 in Bemidji Minnesota to the late Frank and Mabel Schummer. The family moved to Flint, Michigan where Don graduated from Flint Central High School. He worked for Buick Motors for a short time after graduation before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on February 28, 1951. He served in Korea during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954 receiving the Korean Service Medal w/2*, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Service Medal during his time of service. He was very proud to have served his country.
Don joined the Michigan State Police in 1955. During his 38-year career he served at Clinton, Marquette, Ypsilanti, Brighton, and spent many years in Newberry as Post Commander. His final post assignment was in Caro where he retired in 1993. He never used a day of sick leave during his career at MSP. While in Newberry, Don was involved in many community activities and was instrumental in getting the Tahquamenon Falls Little League started.
Don later moved to Naples Florida. He married the former Linda Richards in 1985 and they made their home in Naples and spent the summers at their cabin on North Manistique Lake where they enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Don enjoyed the outdoors, especially the time he spent with his family at their hunting camp in Newberry, and all the family gatherings at their summer cabin. In his later years, he enjoyed sitting outside on the porch watching the birds. He loved his family beyond all else.
Don was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Naples, FL, the Newberry Elks Lodge 1705, Newberry American Legion Post 74, Golden Gate VFW Post 7721 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Naples FL.
Besides his parents, Don is preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy, Betty, and Eleanor, his brother Dan, stepson Kent Richards and mother-in-law Esther Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, siblings Lucille of Winter Park FL and Richard Schummer of Swartz Creek MI, children Dave (Jackie) Schummer, Darlene (Butch) Kisro, Darrell (Terese) Schummer, Dawn (Jim) Mills all of Newberry, and Randy Richards of Naples FL, fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Newberry on October 13th at 1:00 pm. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the church one hour prior to the mass. Burial will take place immediately after the services with military honors.
