Niko Bain
February 8, 1989 – February 3, 2023

Nikolas “Niko” Scott Bain departed this life on February 3, 2023 just 5 days short of his 34th birthday. He was born to his loving parents, Douglas & Robin, and big brother Arron.

Last summer here in Naples, Niko suffered a severe spinal cord injury and complications from an accident, was treated at Lee Trauma Center in Ft. Myers and then soon moved to NCH North. During those six months of living in the hospital, the staff became his extended family. Everyone loved Niko’s brilliant sense of humor and intellect.

Niko is also survived by his parents, brother Arron, sister-in-law Tina Merkouris, niece Natalia and nephew Austyn Bain, wife Shannon, his Aunt Diane (Bain) and Uncle Daniel Keays, adopted aunts and uncles Tree and Drew Mandela, Mike and Linda Smith, and Liv and Scott Snyder.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends and loved ones to make a donation in Niko’s memory to NCH Center for Philanthropy.

I will never forget meeting Niko for the first time! I worked for his mom Robin for a long time back in Peoria, AZ. I was pregnant with my first child and named him Dominic, Niko for short. I was so impressed with him and proud to name my son the same name. He made such a big impression on me! I think the world of Robin so obviously I was amazed by Niko. I loved hearing stories from her and following his journey in life. He is a beautiful soul and brought his mom and dad such joy and pride. I am so heartbroken for them. I have no doubt that Niko was welcomed into the afterlife by his grandparents. I also asked my father, who passed recently, to assist Niko on his new journey. I pray for Niko and his family during this time. I can’t imagine losing my child at such a young age. You will never be forgotten!

Robin and Doug, our deepest condolences to you and Nico’s wife and your family.

It is in our greatest sympathy that you and Doug have lost such a dear and warm son. It is so hard to lose someone so close to you and in that manner. I lost my dearest Danielle, three years ago this month and I wish you all much love and warmth by a surrounding family and loved ones during this time. Although I did not know him personally, I know you and that is enough to know him. God Bless

Oh my I didn’t know you’d lost Danielle. This is not the natural order of life. I can feel your and Cindy’s hugs across the miles. Two things I have learned since February 3rd, take one day at a time and there’s no time like the present.

Niko was my best friend when we were kids, and a lot of my favorite memories of being a kid are memories of hanging out with him. He was always smiling, and he always had a plan for something fun. I feel like we learned how to grow up from watching each other and being together. I’m really so grateful for the friendship we had, and I’m sorry he’s passed on. I know he brought that same bright beaming kid smile into a lot of people’s lives.

Niko started to play golf at age 10 with his Dad and soon became an exceptionally talented golfer. He loved playing for the golf team at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Arizona, and in JGAA and AJGA tournaments across the country. He went on to attend Odessa Junior College in Texas on a full athletic scholarship.
Niko leaves the world a better place because he was here.
